She is the daughter of Michael Ciminella and singer Naomi Judd. She has an older sister, Wynonna.

Ashley Judd born in California, grew up poor in Kentucky after her parents' divorce in 1972. Her mother, Naomi, struggled to raise two daughters on her nurse's salary.

That changed when Judd was a teen. Her mom and sister, Wynonna, formed a country music duo, The Judds, and became the toast of Nashville. Ashley Judd lived with her father during the school year but hit the road with mom and sister during summer breaks.

The pair garnered a few Grammys, until Naomi Judd's illness forced their split. Wynonna Judd embarked on a solo career. At the same time, Ashley Judd's career began its ascent, bolstered by her performance in "Ruby in Paradise." She won an Independent Spirit Award and notoriety beyond her famous family connections.
